Hosea 13:1-14

The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;
    ^(A)he was exalted in Israel,
    but he incurred guilt ^(B)through Baal and died.
²And now they sin more and more,
    and ^(C)make for themselves metal images,
idols skillfully made of their silver,
    ^(D)all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of them,
    “Those who offer human sacrifice ^(E)kiss calves!”
³Therefore they shall be ^(F)like the morning mist
    or ^(G)like the dew that goes early away,
^(H)like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor
    or ^(I)like smoke from a window.

⁴But ^(J)I am the Lord your God
    from the land of Egypt;
^(K)you know no God but me,
    and ^(L)besides me there is no savior.
⁵^(M)It was I who knew you in the wilderness,
    in the land of drought;
⁶^(N)but when they had grazed,^[a] they became full,
    ^(O)they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;
    ^(P)therefore they forgot me.
⁷So ^(Q)I am to them like a lion;
    ^(R)like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.
⁸I will fall upon them ^(S)like a bear robbed of her cubs;
    I will tear open their breast,
and there I will devour them like a lion,
    ^(T)as a wild beast would rip them open.

⁹He destroys^[b] you, O Israel,
    for you are against me, against ^(U)your helper.
¹⁰^(V)Where now is your king, to save you in all your cities?
    Where are all your rulers—
those of whom ^(W)you said,
    “Give me a king and princes”?
¹¹^(X)I gave you a king in my anger,
    and ^(Y)I took him away in my wrath.

¹²The iniquity of Ephraim is ^(Z)bound up;
    his sin is ^(AA)kept in store.
¹³^(AB)The pangs of childbirth come for him,
    but he is an unwise son,
for at the right time he does not present himself
    ^(AC)at the opening of the womb.

¹⁴^(AD)I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;
    ^(AE)I shall redeem them from Death.^[c]
^(AF)O ^(AG)Death, where are your plagues?
    ^(AH)O ^(AI)Sheol, where is your sting?
    ^(AJ)Compassion is hidden from my eyes.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

14 ^(A)“Let not your hearts be troubled. ^(B)Believe in God;^[a] believe also in me. ²In ^(C)my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that ^(D)I go to prepare a place for you?^[b] ³And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you ^(E)to myself, that ^(F)where I am you may be also. ⁴And you know the way to where I am going.”^[c] ⁵^(G)Thomas said to him, “Lord, ^(H)we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” ⁶Jesus said to him, “I am ^(I)the way, and ^(J)the truth, and ^(K)the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. ⁷^(L)If you had known me, you would have ^(M)known my Father also.^[d] From now on you do know him and ^(N)have seen him.”

⁸^(O)Philip said to him, “Lord, ^(P)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” ⁹Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? ^(Q)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ¹⁰Do you not believe that ^(R)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you ^(S)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. ¹¹Believe me that ^(T)I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else ^(U)believe on account of the works themselves.

¹²“Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(V)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I ^(W)am going to the Father. ¹³^(X)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that ^(Y)the Father may be glorified in the Son. ¹⁴^(Z)If you ask me^[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

A Plea to Return to the Lord

14 ^(A)Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
    for ^(B)you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
²Take with you words
    and return to the Lord;
say to him,
    “Take away all iniquity;
accept ^(C)what is good,
    and we will pay with bulls
    ^(D)the vows^[a] of our lips.
³^(E)Assyria shall not save us;
    ^(F)we will not ride on horses;
and ^(G)we will say no more, ‘Our God,’
    to the work of our hands.
^(H)In you the orphan finds mercy.”

⁴I ^(I)will heal their apostasy;
    ^(J)I will love them freely,
    for my anger has turned from them.
⁵^(K)I will be like the dew to Israel;
    ^(L)he shall blossom like the lily;
    he shall take root like the trees ^(M)of Lebanon;
⁶his shoots shall spread out;
    his beauty shall be ^(N)like the olive,
    and his fragrance like Lebanon.
⁷They shall return and ^(O)dwell beneath my^[b] shadow;
    they shall flourish like the grain;
they shall blossom like the vine;
    their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

⁸O ^(P)Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?
It is I who answer and look after you.^[c]
I am like an evergreen cypress;
^(Q)from me comes your fruit.

⁹^(R)Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
    whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the Lord are right,
    and ^(S)the upright walk in them,
    ^(T)but transgressors stumble in them.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

¹⁵^(A)“If you love me, you will ^(B)keep my commandments. ¹⁶And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another ^(C)Helper,^[a] to be with you forever, ¹⁷even ^(D)the Spirit of truth, ^(E)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and ^(F)will be^[b] in you.

¹⁸“I will not leave you as orphans; ^(G)I will come to you. ¹⁹^(H)Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but ^(I)you will see me. ^(J)Because I live, you also will live. ²⁰^(K)In that day you will know that ^(L)I am in my Father, and ^(M)you in me, and ^(N)I in you. ²¹^(O)Whoever has my commandments and ^(P)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And ^(Q)he who loves me ^(R)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and ^(S)manifest myself to him.” ²²^(T)Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it ^(U)that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” ²³Jesus answered him, ^(V)“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and ^(W)we will come to him and ^(X)make our home with him. ²⁴Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. ²⁵“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. ²⁶But the ^(Z)Helper, the Holy Spirit, ^(AA)whom the Father will send in my name, ^(AB)he will teach you all things and ^(AC)bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. ²⁷^(AD)Peace I leave with you; ^(AE)my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. ^(AF)Let not your hearts be troubled, neither ^(AG)let them be afraid. ²⁸^(AH)You heard me say to you, ^(AI)‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I ^(AJ)am going to the Father, for ^(AK)the Father is greater than I. ²⁹And ^(AL)now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. ³⁰I will no longer talk much with you, for ^(AM)the ruler of this world is coming. ^(AN)He has no claim on me, ³¹but I do ^(AO)as the Father has commanded me, ^(AP)so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
